We are also deeply grateful to David, Donnell, and Ramon for their support and assistance on Saturday, helping ensure the event ran smoothly.

Throughout the celebration, the Gospel was shared and Bibles were distributed, grounding the day in purpose and hope. Laughter echoed as children participated in two Easter egg hunts, while families enjoyed tasty food, music, and dancing together. Children and adults alike joined in the fun, creating memories through play, movement, and connection. One of the most loved moments of the day was taking pictures with the Easter Bunny, which quickly became a fan favorite.

Our first Easter Celebration was a beautiful reminder of what happens when community comes together. We are grateful to everyone who attended, served, and helped make this day so meaningful, and we look forward to many more moments like this in the future.

Recently, I had the honor of sharing a message at a local Chicago ministry to encourage high school students in their faith as Black believers. I titled my message “Beautiful, Black, and Biblical.” Too often, our young people are told, or given the impression, that Blackness (which reflects a wide variety of cultures rooted in the African diaspora) has no place in God’s story.

Yet that is far from the truth. God intentionally created Black people and our various cultural expressions in His image. Our heritage is not accidental, and it is not outside of God’s redemptive plan. We are called to know and celebrate Him fully because of these realities.

“Cut Africa out of the Bible and Christian memory, and you have misplaced many pivotal scenes of salvation history. It is the story of the children of Abraham in Africa; Joseph in Africa; Moses in Africa; Mary, Joseph and Jesus in Africa; and shortly thereafter Mark, and Perpetua and Athanasius, and Augustine in Africa.”
- Thomas Oden

As I reflect on this, I am reminded that Black History Month itself, now celebrating 100 years, is a testament to this intertwining of identity and faith. It is incredible to think it began in 1926 as Negro History Week, established by Carter G. Woodson. Over time, it grew into the month-long celebration we honor today.

Growing up, I was not taught much Black history in school, like many of us. But when I came to Chicago’s South Side, I immersed myself in it, especially through our ministry work here in Woodlawn. This neighborhood and its surrounding community hold so much history. It is the former home of Lorraine Hansberry, whose work A Raisin in the Sun was inspired here. It is the home of Emmett Till. It is also a resting place for leaders such as Jesse Owens, Ida B. Wells, and Harold Washington. This area was home to cultural giants like Jesse Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Muddy Waters, Sam Cooke, and Curtis Mayfield, each of whom helped shape American culture. Our community was part of the Underground Railroad and a destination during the Great Migration. The legacy of believers who helped lead the Civil Rights movement is woven throughout this area.

16 years ago, you couldn’t have convinced a young CW that this would be his story. I never imagined I would learn so much about my own identity here at Sunshine. For me, it is God’s grace that I get to be part of a ministry championing justice and mercy. I am grateful to be both a Black believer and a steward of this history.

Happy Black History Month!

Across generations, we have witnessed God’s faithfulness in transforming lives through students who participated in programs, mentors and coaches who guided them, staff who led the work, and directors who stewarded the mission.

The generational impact of Sunshine continues to humble and inspire us to keep the torch shining. A few members of the Sunshine family recently reflected on how the ministry shaped their lives.

“Sunshine made the greatest impact on my life,”

Shared 78-year-old Dale Lock, who first became involved with the ministry from 1966 to 1969 while a student at Emmaus Bible College.

During those years, Dale regularly served in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green Homes, leading youth clubs in the apartments and organizing outings on Friday nights. Summers were spent serving at Sun‑Chi‑Win Camp. In 1969, he moved into the mission as a youth worker.
One memory has stayed with him for more than five decades.

“While waiting for a bus to a Cubs game, four teenage boys thanked me for being their mentor and for simply being myself with them,” Dale recalled. “Fifty years later, one of those boys, now a worship leader, again thanked me for mentoring him. I will never forget that.”

Another memory from Dale’s early days in Chicago was visiting a young couple, Columbus Salley and Jackie Salley, shortly after they moved into their home.

“I remember Jackie holding their two-week-old baby, Christopher, in her arms,” Dale said. “Time moves on and my body grows weak, but my love for God, allowing me to have the Sunshine experience, still shines in my heart.”

Nearly six decades later, that same baby, Christopher Salley, shared his own Sunshine story during the Sunshine 120th Anniversary Gala on December 6, 2025.

“I am Christopher Salley,” he told the audience. “I was the two-week-old Dale mentioned.”

Christopher’s parents grew up in Cabrini-Green and became connected to Sunshine when the ministry was located at 604 N. Clark Street on Chicago’s Near North Side.

Christopher brought with him to the gala a Sunshine monthly publication from August 1964, mailed decades ago to Gwendetta Albright. The publication’s tagline read: “Ministering in Chicago’s Worst Half Mile.”

The cover featured a photo of Dale Howard alongside Christopher’s father, Columbus Salley, who helped direct the Sunshine summer camp. Christopher attended Sun-Chi-Win Camp every summer growing up, where both of his parents served as volunteers and leaders.

“I saw what the Kingdom of God is supposed to look like,” Christopher said. “Sunshine showed me what’s possible when people connect around a shared faith in Christ and His calling for our lives. I will always be grateful.”

In a remarkable full-circle moment, Christopher continues to be part of the Sunshine family today as the husband of Kimberly Salley, the current Executive Director of Sunshine Gospel Ministries.

The 60-year-old publication Christopher held that night also connected the audience to another chapter of Sunshine’s story: 82-year-old Gwendetta Albright, who first attended the ministry as a child.

“When we went to camp, we traveled by train,” Gwendetta remembered with a smile. “My mother would take us downtown, and after about nine hours we arrived at camp where we went hiking, swimming, fishing, and bowling.”

One mentor left a lasting impression.

“I remember a woman named Dorothy Ferrett. We called her Dotty. She was wonderful.”
As a teenager, Gwendetta returned to camp not just as a participant but as a junior leader, eventually becoming the director of the girls in grades 6 - 8.

“I’m still in touch with some of the people from those days,” she said. “They mean so much to me.”

For people like Christopher, Sun-Chi-Win Camp was a place of deep formation - where faith, character, and calling began to take root. For Gwendetta, it became a place to grow into leadership and give back. And for many others, Sunshine has ignited a lifelong calling.
David Dillon, a faithful partner of the ministry for 25 consecutive years and a former Sunshine board member, shared how the ministry influenced his own family.

“I first learned about Sunshine in the early 1980s through a friend,” David said. “Eventually, I served on the board for seven years. Michelle and I deeply believe in organizations that are rooted in the community, serving the community, and Sunshine has been doing that for generations.”

Later, David discovered something remarkable about his own family history.
“My father told me that when he was 12 years old, an executive director from Sunshine came to speak in his hometown in Michigan. That day, he decided he wanted to become a full-time minister.”

David’s parents would later serve as missionaries to Japan for 30 years.

“I didn’t know any of this while I was serving on the Sunshine board,” David said. “But Sunshine had already played a significant role in my father’s life, and eventually in mine.”

Stories like these reflect the extraordinary way Sunshine continues to connect and transform generations.

What began in 1905 as a small mission to serve single mothers, launched by Moody Church on Chicago’s North Side, has grown into a ministry serving the whole family. Today, Sunshine Gospel Ministries continues to pursue the renewal of the city through discipleship, mercy, and justice.

For 120 years, God has been writing a story of transformation, one life, one family, and one generation at a time.

Because of the continued support of our donors, partners, and friends, Sunshine Gospel Ministries strengthened programs, expanded our reach, and built momentum that is carrying us boldly into 2026.

We are beginning 2026 by closing our January applications for the Seed to Grow Scholarship, marking an important milestone in our continued investment in education, opportunity, and long term growth for our community. Supporting learners and emerging leaders at every stage remains a core part of our mission, and we are excited to grow this initiative even further in the year ahead.

In 2025, our WorkLife program opened doors to opportunity and financial stability for participants in meaningful ways. Twelve individuals enrolled in our pilot cohort, and all twelve completed three months of soft skills training. Along the way, six industry certifications were earned, and nine participants successfully completed on the job placements. Two high school students were unable to be placed during the school year due to scheduling limitations, but they remain engaged and positioned for future opportunities. These outcomes reflect confidence built, skills strengthened, and pathways created.

Our Flourishing Community Initiative/Violence Intervention Program also expanded its reach throughout 2025. Through intentional relationship building and on the ground engagement, we extended our presence into additional South Side communities, meeting people where they are and reinforcing our commitment to safety, healing, and community led solutions. This work continues to grow because the need is real and the impact is tangible.

At the same time, programs like Familyhood, Youth Outreach, and our Housing Equity Initiative ensured that our core service work continued to move forward with consistency and care. Over the course of the year, we served hundreds of families through food distribution, housing resources, afterschool programming, and summer enrichment opportunities. These efforts remain central to who we are, and we look forward to returning in 2026 at maximum level and pace to serve even more families.

As 2025 came to a close, we welcomed the Workers Center for Racial Justice to our campus. Their onsite presence strengthens our ecosystem of support by providing political education and community centered services that promote awareness, advocacy, and empowerment.

We also launched our Behavioral Health Initiative in 2025, reinforcing our commitment to health and wellness as essential to thriving individuals and communities. This initiative represents an important step toward holistic care and long term stability.

As we move into 2026, momentum continues to build. We are making meaningful progress toward raising funds for our capital campaign, expanding program capacity, and deepening partnerships across the city. There is so much ahead, and we are energized by what is possible.

To stay connected and learn more about upcoming programs and opportunities, we invite you to sign up for our email newsletter and visit our website.

Thank you to every donor, partner, volunteer, and community member who supported Sunshine Gospel Ministries throughout 2025. Because of you, we step into 2026 with confidence, energy, and a shared belief that the best is still ahead.

It was a day filled with music, laughter, and pride.

The kids, from elementary through high school, performed dances and showcased their artwork, while families gathered to eat, connect, and celebrate. Our volunteers from BridgeBuilders walked alongside us, and partners offered free health checks, nutrition tips, and back-to-school supplies. It was a day that reflected the heartbeat of our mission: renewal through joy, connection, and care.

In the crowd that day was Yassmen Dickerson, a single mother raising nine-year-old twin girls, Heaven and Hope. For her, this summer was more than activities; it was a lifeline.
“My twins have been attending the camp, and they’ve been so excited about everything,” Yassmen told us. “One thing they couldn’t stop talking about was today’s showcase. They were so proud to have me here watching them perform. Usually, I’m working the morning shift and can’t be there. This means so much to them.”

For Yassmen, summers bring both joy and challenge, especially as a single mother working hard for her family. Work leaves little time to keep her daughters engaged and safe. But at our camp, Hany and Fany spent their days learning, exploring, laughing, reading, doing math, field trips, swimming, skating, playing sports, and much more.

“I’m so grateful,” she said. “As single mommies, we work a lot and there isn’t much we can do with our children. But to know they have a camp where they can learn, play, and experience new things; it’s been a blessing. We really appreciate it.”

When we hear words like Yassmen’s, we’re reminded why we do this work and why your support matters. Every field trip, every mentorship hour, every smile you helped make possible carries forward the renewal we seek together.

Yet in the communities we serve, Woodlawn and Washington Park, too many families cannot call the place they live their home.

In Washington Park, where roughly nine out of ten residents are black, only one in eight households owns their home. In Woodlawn, the rate is slightly better, about one in five households own a home. These figures, drawn from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) community data snapshot, 2019–2023 ACS estimates, paint a stark picture of racial inequity: neighborhoods rich in culture and history, yet locked out of the stability and dignity that come with ownership.

“Our Housing Equity Initiative was inspired by the Woodlawn and Washington Park communities,” explains Kayla Williams, our Director of Housing Development and Property Management. “We surveyed residents to understand their greatest needs, and what we heard was clear - it was homeownership, it was education around housing, it was assistance with property taxes, and it was the lack of affordable housing stock. That’s what inspired the framework for our Housing Equity Initiative (HEI).”

HEI stands on three pillars: Retention, Readiness, and Revitalization. Through Retention, we assist families with their property taxes delinquencies, while offering financial literacy workshops, and linking them to long-term stability resources. Our approach to Readiness, equips residents with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions and navigate the home-buying process. Through Revitalization, we develop vacant properties into beautiful, energy-efficient homes, creating deeply affordable ownership opportunities for families in Woodlawn and Washington Park.

When 41-year-old Tyrise, a single mother of two, heard about our Home Buyer Readiness Program, she enrolled in 2024.

“I have had 15 years of experience working with youth and young adults and always wanted to support and empower others,” Tyrise shares, “but this time in my life, I wanted to empower myself. Being in there amongst people that have homes or don’t have homes was so encouraging,” she recalls. “There was one moment we had with a guest speaker, Cassandra Sneed, Exit Realityrealtor. When I was expressing how scared I am, she hugged me and said, ‘It’s going to be okay. You are going to get there.’ That encouragement from others, I wouldn’t have gotten it if I weren’t in that space.”

“When we have a family like Tyrise,” Kayla says, “we already know they’re coming in with hesitation, fear that they don’t know what they’re doing or where to start. We let them know this is attainable for their family, that they don’t have to be afraid, and as they go through the various training meetings, we begin to see transformation. We see them begin to budget better, save more, improve their credit scores, get lender-ready and become more confident.”

Speaking of the spark that keeps us going, Kayla adds, “Our faith is the leading factor in this work. God provides the resources and the people, and He guides us to meet the needs of this community.”

With her face covered in smiles, Tyrise shared, “Thank you for giving your time, your efforts, your finances, because it goes a long way. You’re supporting me, but I’m able to pass it down to my 19-year-old and my 6-year-old daughter and show them how special homeownership is, and that it’s something they can do too.”

With every family that moves from fear to faith, from renter to homeowner, we are closing the gap and rebuilding the promise of generational wealth in Woodlawn and Washington Park.

You can be part of making housing equity possible for families in Woodlawn and Washington Park by referring someone you know who needs the right information to enroll in the next cohort of our Home Buyer Readiness Program (HBRP).

If you have expertise in housing, real estate, or law, you can also volunteer your time as a guest speaker in one of our sessions to equip participants with the information they need to move forward and succeed.

You can also make a donation. I often felt overwhelmed and disappointed in myself for falling short with my husband and daughter.”

In trying to keep the peace, Brenda began to withdraw. “I was focusing on trying to please others by keeping the peace through withdrawing and being ready to check out of my marriage.” Still, she prayed. “I was leaning on my faith for guidance, praying constantly to receive help in restoring and retaining my family.”

Her husband, Randall Bunch, felt the strain too. “My family life before Sunshine was like a seek and search for answers on how to be a better husband and father,” he explains, “as well as becoming a better steward and servant for God.”

That search led them to Familyhood, Sunshine Gospel Ministries’ family-strengthening program that brings parents and children together through faith-based classes, shared meals, therapy access, and consistent relational support so families don’t have to navigate challenges alone.

Brenda’s entry point was a simple invitation to a Sunshine class. She prayed, did her research, and soon received a call from Sasha Simmons, SGM Managing Director of Programs.

“Her kind, soft-spoken voice asked if I had any questions,” Brenda recalls. “Next, she asked if she could pray for and with me.” That moment mattered.

Brenda’s first Familyhood experience was Raising Highly Capable Kids, a parenting cohort that blends practical tools with prayer and reflection. “Although I’ve taken other developmental classes in the past, this class was different,” she says. “It started and concluded with prayer.” Even during the pandemic, sitting behind a computer screen, Brenda felt something shift. “I was grateful, Jehovah was answering my prayers.”

Familyhood encourages families to walk the journey together, so Brenda brought what she learned home. “I always tried to encourage my husband to sign up for a class,” she says. When Sunshine resumed Family.Activities.Meals (F.A.M.) Night, a space where families share meals, conversations, games, and faith-based activities, Brenda invited both Randall and their daughter to attend together. “Needless to say,” she adds, “they have been attending FAM since then.”

Randall remembers that decision clearly. “My wife had been to a few meetings with Sunshine and suggested that I should come to the next meeting,” he says. “I saw how enthusiastic she was with the program. I decided to give it a try.” What followed surprised him. “SGM has turned out to be a major positive boost to how I now interact with married life.”

A turning point came through Familyhood’s mental health support. During a Sunshine healthcare symposium, individual counseling was offered at no cost. Brenda remembers Randall saying he would attend therapy if it weren’t so expensive. After hearing Dr. Jasmine Seely, one of our mental health support consultants, speak, “he signed up immediately.”

Over time, real change took root. “I’ve noticed positive changes in how we communicate with each other,” Brenda says. “Not over-talking, but listening.” She noticed she was no longer withdrawing. “By attending classes offered by SGM, we are participating together more.”

Randall felt it too. “I’ve learned to listen more patiently,” he says, “and to speak in a way that offers peace and abundance.”

For Brenda, the growth was also personal. “I’ve regained my voice,” she shares. “My outlook on life has improved spiritually, mentally, physically, and I’ve gained financial literacy.” She’s learning to care for herself and show up more fully for her family.

Their daughter found her place as well, through F.A.M. Nights, conversations, and relationships with staff who listened and understood. “She eagerly participated,” Brenda says. “She’s heard. She’s supported.” Seeing her daughter smiling and laughing with staff has been priceless.

Today, their home feels different, not perfect, but grounded. “In spite of life’s challenges,” Brenda says, “gratitude is the attitude of our days.”

When asked what she wants donors to know, her answer is simple. “Thank you. Your generosity and support have blessed my family beyond measure.” When life felt overwhelming, she says, “SGM offered hope, encouragement, prayers, and real support.”

Through Familyhood workshop classes, therapy, shared meals, and consistent care, the Bunch family found what they were praying for: support, strength, and a way forward together.

“SGM offers hope to all that come through its doors,” Brenda says. “It builds our faith and helps us become better human beings.”

Instead, they stepped into something deeper, a week that reshaped their understanding of faith, justice, and what it means to seek shalom in community. Caleb later wrote to us, “I wanted to reach out and thank you so much again for all of your leadership, guidance, teaching, and care for us during our time with BridgeBuilders from August 3-8. From beginning to end you gave us the gift of learning that helped us connect our faith with shalom in the city.”

His words reflect what BridgeBuilders has always aimed to do: break down harmful or incomplete narratives about neighborhoods like Woodlawn and Washington Park and replace them with relationships, truth, and shared humanity. Participants, often from suburban or more affluent communities, arrive with questions, hesitations, and assumptions. They leave with friendships, humility, and a deeper understanding of justice.

This year, Caleb’s group was one of the 155 participants from the 12 cities who spent a combined 64 days immersed in our community. They gardened with neighbors, listened to residents’ stories, got immersed in our Poverty Simulation exercise, and joined discussions that helped them process what they were learning.

For Caleb, the feeling of welcome began the moment they arrived. “We are so grateful for the time we had with you and the rest of the staff,” he wrote. “We had the opportunity to reconnect as a group last weekend and we had so much to share and reflect upon. All of this is a result of your great leadership and direction.”

His group was not alone in this experience. Nearly 85% of this year’s participants shared that the week helped them feel better equipped to return home and have honest, often difficult conversations about inequality, justice, and compassion. Many said, “I am very excited to tell my family about everything I’ve learned,” while others reflected, “Remember to not shelter yourself in your own beliefs.” Again and again, people described going home with “new eyes.”

One of those participants was Edwin, an 18-year-old from San Francisco who, like many, arrived unsure of what to expect. As a Chinese-American young adult from an immigrant family, he wondered whether he would feel out of place in a community so different from his own. But by the end of the week, his worries had softened into connection. Through serving with our partners, learning the history of Woodlawn, and listening closely to residents, he felt embraced rather than out of place. “I really got to experience the community and make a connection with Woodlawn,” Edwin shared. “Not only did I love serving this community, I loved learning about the history and the real people behind the scenes.” His transformation echoed Caleb’s, different background, same bridge.

Our community partners see these moments unfold year after year. Urban gardener Bill Hill, who has walked alongside BridgeBuilders for more than a decade, says he can always find common ground with anyone willing to put their hands in the soil. His garden becomes a meeting place where assumptions fade and humanity rises to the surface. “The BridgeBuilders groups have always been a blessing and a gift to us,” Bill shared. “Thanks to their help and service, our gardens always look beautiful for the whole community to enjoy.”

Stories like Caleb’s and Edwin’s remind us what happens when people slow down long enough to truly listen. BridgeBuilders is not simply a program; it is an invitation to humility, empathy, and courage. It is a chance to let faith turn into action, to let learning become transformation, and to let strangers become neighbors.

As we look toward 2026, we hope to deepen this work by welcoming new community partners, creating a curriculum for returning participants who want to continue their justice journey, and raising future leaders, some of whom, like Caleb, first encountered this work through a single immersion week and left with a calling to build bridges wherever they go.

Caleb ended his note with a line that stays with us: “From the bottom of all our hearts at Oxford UMC, thank you!” But the gratitude is mutual. Every person who crosses the bridge toward Woodlawn becomes part of its story, carrying home seeds of understanding, compassion, and justice that, when planted, help communities everywhere move a little closer to shalom.

The event ran from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM and served as a celebration of everything our students have accomplished during their time in our summer programming, which was led by the talented team at Genesis Music and Arts.

With over 60 summer participants and the support of our wonderful community, the showcase drew families, neighbors, and friends together for an afternoon filled with pride and inspiration.

Under sunny skies and surrounded by the excitement of family, friends, and neighbors, our students stepped into the spotlight and shared the incredible work they have been doing all summer long. Their performances were nothing short of inspiring. The afternoon featured a high-energy dance battle routine that had the entire audience clapping and moving along. These young performers showed not only skill, but confidence, teamwork, and passion for the arts.

As part of the program, the children also sang several songs, including a moving rendition of Michael Jackson’s classic, We Are the World. Their voices rang out with hope and unity, capturing the spirit of the summer and reminding everyone in attendance of the power young people have to bring about positive change.

In addition to the performances, the event included an impressive display of arts and crafts projects. One of the highlights was a collection of beautifully created African masks, which reflected both the students’ creativity and their cultural learning throughout the summer. These pieces stood as a proud symbol of identity, history, and artistic expression.

Our amazing team of volunteers, all wearing their bright green camp shirts, were out in full force. Their dedication and care were evident in every detail of the day, from organizing activities to serving up food and welcoming families. It was their energy and commitment that truly helped bring the event to life.

The showcase was more than just a performance — it was a community celebration. We were proud to partner with several outstanding organizations who joined us to provide resources, support, and fun for families.

Future Ties brought joy and excitement with inflatable attractions that kept children laughing and playing throughout the afternoon. The Women of the Chicago Police Department made a special appearance to show their support and connect with community members in a meaningful way. Gift of Hope generously provided 250 backpacks, ensuring students were well-prepared for the upcoming school year — a gift that was deeply appreciated by all.

Our commitment to community health was supported by the presence of Christian Community Health Center, which offered valuable information about health services in our area. They also provided free HIV and STI screenings, an important step in promoting wellness and awareness in our neighborhoods.

Just Roots offered families access to fresh produce, supporting healthy eating habits and food equity. And Chef Maria made a special visit to share cooking tips, meal preparation strategies, and creative ideas for making healthy food delicious and accessible at home.

Of course, no summer celebration would be complete without great food. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served fresh off the grill, bringing everyone together over a classic cookout meal.

As the streets filled with the laughter of children and the smiles of proud parents, it was clear that this event was more than a showcase — it was a beautiful expression of what can happen when a community comes together to support its youth. This summer, our students didn’t just have fun. They grew, they learned, they created, and they connected.

Now, as we look forward to the school year ahead, we do so with pride in our hearts and excitement for what’s to come. We are incredibly grateful to our partners, our volunteers, and every family who participated in this journey. Together, we made this summer truly unforgettable.

Thank you for celebrating with us.

Until next time, keep shining, keep creating, and keep building the community we all believe in.

This experience begins with a guided tour that offers more than just a look at the physical landscape. It uncovers the deeper stories and systemic realities that shape the lives of residents. These stories help illustrate how ministry has often drifted from the true meaning of Shalom...the biblical vision of holistic peace, justice, and restoration...especially in financially underserved communities.

Following the tour, participants engage in a powerful Poverty Simulation. This interactive experience condenses 28 days of living at or below the poverty line into a one to one-and-a-half-hour session. Each participant receives a character card representing an individual, couple, or family facing real-life challenges with limited resources and specific circumstances.

Throughout the simulation, participants must navigate a network of community resources. These include a currency exchange, social services, a grocery store, the court system, and even the alderman's office. The goal is not to win or solve poverty, but to encounter its complexity in a way that fosters empathy, understanding, and a renewed commitment to justice.

Many begin the simulation thinking it is just a game to beat. Most end it with a profound sense of awareness, often moved by how difficult it is to maintain stability when every system feels stacked against you.

As one Bridge Builder participant shared at the end of their experience,

“I feel like I need to go home and apologize to my parents. The Poverty Simulation is not just an activity. It is an invitation to see the world through a different lens and to step more intentionally into lives marked by compassion, responsibility, and action.

If you would like to bring this transformative simulation to your church or organization, contact us at bb@sunshinegospel.org. Let us journey together toward reclaiming the peace of Shalom in our communities.

What began as a small, grassroots gathering has now grown into a cornerstone community event—one that celebrates collective progress, fosters meaningful connections, and brings critical resources directly to residents.

Over 20 vendors lined the event space, offering a wide range of services and opportunities. From free health screenings and mental wellness resources, to debt relief counseling, job readiness programs, and youth services, the summit functioned as a one-stop hub for empowerment and holistic support. She is a dancer, cheerleader, and a "great friend" who serves as the glue that holds her circle together. Her kind heart, intelligence, and giving spirit have made her a beloved member of her community. On August 13, 2022, an exciting opportunity arose for Mikiah and her school's dance/cheer team, AIM (Art In Motion). They were set to perform in the annual Bud Billiken Day Parade, a momentous occasion that would be etched in Mikiah's memory. Under the scorching August sun, Mikiah and her team embarked on a 2-mile performance. However, about halfway through, she overheated and vomited. Despite this setback, her determination and resilience shone brightly. After a brief rest, she was back on her feet, ready to finish the performance, a testament to her indomitable spirit. Just a month later, on September 14, 2022, Mikiah and her team had the privilege of performing for rapper Common during Community Day at school. It was a day filled with joy, music, and laughter, a testament to Mikiah's commitment to her passions and her community.

However, the very next day, September 15, 2022, life took an unexpected turn. Mikiah collapsed in her room and was found unresponsive by her brother, Michael. Panic ensued, and 911 was called immediately. She had gone into cardiac arrest. After receiving a pulse, she was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago, where her family and medical professionals prayed for her recovery. For the next two weeks, Mikiah's life hung in the balance. She was placed in the ICU, heavily sedated, and hooked up to various machines. The medical team worked tirelessly to uncover the root cause of her collapse and cardiac arrest. Numerous tests were conducted, including MRI scans of her heart and brain.

While her heart was found to be healthy, the MRI revealed severe brain damage due to a lack of oxygen during the cardiac arrest. Mikiah had lost her motor skills and awareness of her surroundings. The medical team delivered the harsh reality that the brain does not repair itself, leaving Mikiah's family facing unimaginable decisions. Mikiah's life, once filled with dance, cheerleading, and community activities, had taken an unexpected turn. Her family was now navigating a new reality filled with hospital visits, specialists, and uncertainty about the future.

Day by day, Mikiah continued to astonish her family and medical professionals. She defied the medical facts that suggested her brain couldn't repair itself. Her progress was evident in her ability to breathe without assistance, a feat that was once deemed unlikely. Mikiah's determination was nothing short of inspiring, and it became evident that her journey was far from over. Despite the grim prognosis, Mikiah's family chose to give her more time, believing in the power of God. Her mother's heartfelt prayer called upon God to heal her daughter, and Mikiah began to show signs of progress. She gradually regained the ability to breathe on her own, defying the medical expectations.

While celebrating Mikiah's recovery, a new health issue began to surface. Despite medical efforts to promote blood flow in her body, her family was not adequately informed about measures to prevent loss of mobility in her limbs. As her body continued to heal, Mikiah faced another obstacle that required additional attention and care. After a lengthy stay in the hospital, Mikiah was transferred to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab for rehabilitation. Despite the initial challenges, her progress was nothing short of remarkable. She began speaking, eating, and making strides in her physical recovery. With the support of her family and an incredible team of medical professionals, Mikiah's journey to reclaim her life had begun.

As of today, Mikiah is attending Shirley Ryan Ability Lab for intensive outpatient therapy. Her determination and unwavering spirit shine brightly as she works toward her goals of walking, returning to school, and regaining her independence. Although the cause of her initial health crisis remains a mystery, Mikiah's story is a testament to the power of hope, faith, and the incredible strength of God.

Founded by Commander Watson of the Third District Police Department, the “Together We Can” initiative is a weekly meeting with the community that has the goal of creating collaborations that reduce and prevent violence in the Third District.

The theme of this year's youth summit was “Proper Preparation: Navigating My Summer Safely”. Donnell has invited youth from over 12 grammar schools and 3 high schools. A total of 20 vendors participated in this year's Youth Summit, providing needed resources for youth.

With over 80 young adults and young children in attendance, Sunshine gave them a sense of hope, excitement, and wanting to learn more about building success and the importance of education and community.

While the Woodlawn community constantly evolves, Sunshine’s goal is to bring awareness to our youth of the many opportunities they have in life. One of the most violent times in the city of Chicago is during the summer. Preparing youth for the summer is a key preventive aspect to ensuring that violence is reduced.

Upon arrival, we asked all the youth to write down a prayer request before the break-out sessions. During our break-out sessions, our young adults and youth were able to go around each booth to gain more information on our provided partners like Champs Mentoring, Project Hood, The Black Men Lawyer’s Association, and much more!

“ They stayed the entire time and were very attentive to what our guest speakers had to say. They wanted to be poured into that day on a Saturday morning” - Donnell Williams

The Youth Summit is only one aspect of what the Flourishing Community Initiative accomplishes in our community. FCI is committed to advancing trauma-informed approaches to gun violence through individual support, community collaboration, and advocacy. Our staff is dedicated to helping those who have been most impacted by gun violence- the victims of gun violence and their families.

Ultimately, the goal is to interrupt the cycle of retaliatory violence, which is one of the leading factors behind gun violence incidents in Chicago. The FCI team does this by making sure people get counseling if they need it, helping them move to a safer place if necessary, finding non-violent solutions to feelings of revenge, and assisting with paperwork to get financial compensation. The program aims to make a positive impact in reducing gun violence and helping survivors and their families heal.

Next year, the Flourishing Community Initiative dreams of the youth summit growing to serve over 100 youth and growing to be a recurring event that youth look forward to in the Woodlawn community.
