“The Behavioral Health Initiative is the support system that makes it possible for our programs, participants, and communities to flourish.”
— Hiba Moinuddin (Behavioral Health Program Director)
OUR
APPROACH
Sunshine’s Behavioral Health Initiative exists to foster emotional wellness and collective healing across Woodlawn and surrounding communities. Our approach centers on dignity, trauma-informed care, and rooted relationships—addressing mental health in the context of faith, justice, and community strength.
We provide accessible, culturally-responsive care to individuals and families impacted by trauma, stress, and systemic hardship. We believe healing happens in community. Our goal is to destigmatize mental health, provide accessible tools for emotional well-being, and create spaces where both staff and neighbors feel supported, equipped, and heard.
Whether through one-on-one care, group processing, or education, we are building a culture where wholeness is possible. We also work to remove systemic barriers to care—offering tangible support like assistance with accessing and funding critical psychotropic medications for those who need it most.
All services are provided at no cost to participants, and we also offer mental health assessments to support deeper care planning when needed.
OUR PROGRAMMING
These offerings are designed to help participants heal and thrive—in body, mind, and spirit.
Staff Wellness Circles
Monthly check-ins and facilitated wellness sessions for SGM staff to process stress, build emotional regulation tools, and practice sustainable rhythms of care in a safe and restorative environment.
Community Care Cohorts
Small group sessions co-facilitated by trained behavioral health professionals that explore themes such as trauma, grief, anxiety, and resilience through a faith-informed and culturally grounded lens.
Mental Health 101 Workshops
Interactive education sessions for parents, youth workers, and volunteers covering foundational mental health topics including trauma, youth development, self-regulation, and community-based healing strategies.
1:1 Support & Resource Navigation
Confidential, short-term coaching or care sessions available for individuals needing support, guidance, or referrals to licensed clinicians. This also includes help navigating insurance, therapy options, support groups, and—when needed—financial assistance for prescribed psychotropic medications through our internal Medication Assistance Fund.
Behavioral Health Integration with Programs
Through collaboration with existing SGM program teams, we help identify emotional and behavioral health needs and co-create support systems that fit naturally into the rhythms of each program’s work.
Medication Access Support
To further address barriers to mental health care, we are launching an initiative to fund prescribed psychotropic medications for participants who are uninsured, in crisis, or temporarily unable to afford their prescriptions. This effort aims to reduce medication non-adherence and support sustained mental wellness across our community.
Nutrition & Movement-Based Wellness
We recognize the vital connection between physical and emotional well-being. As part of our holistic approach to healing, we now offer:
- Yoga for families and yoga tailored to seniors, supporting stress relief, flexibility, and connection across generations
- Gentle physical fitness sessions for seniors, promoting strength, balance, and overall wellness in a safe, supportive setting
