Where Art Meets Therapy: A Juneteenth Celebration of Healing

There is something beautiful that happens when we slow down, gather, and make space to express what words often cannot. Sometimes that expression reconnects us with parts of ourselves we've neglected or forgotten. For many of us, that looked like picking up a paintbrush again for the first time in years and rediscovering the simple joy of creating.

On the evening of June 18 (Juneteenth Eve), we gathered with our neighbors for our first paint-and-sip experience, Where Art Meets Therapy, an evening that invited us to slow down, create, and reconnect. As DJ Mar filled the room with soulful music, Chicago visual and performing artist Dionne Victoria guided neighbors and staff through a time of reflection, encouraging everyone to pause, breathe, and be present. Together, we honored the sacred past while painting visions of a future rooted in hope.

One of the most beautiful sights of the evening was watching neighborhood seniors sit alongside younger community members, exchanging wisdom and smiles over shared canvases and meals. As creativity nourished the soul, incredible flavors nourished our bodies through a selection of Haitian-inspired dishes from LIOR's Café, along with refreshments and classic favorites from Lenore's Kitchen. What a gift.

"It was an evening where we celebrated creativity, healing, community, and culture," shared Ramon Jenkins, Case Manager for our Flourishing Community Initiative. "It was inspiring to see community members, especially seniors, come together to create a space where healing, creativity, and community could intersect. We enjoyed an evening of reflection, artistic expression, and connection in a welcoming and supportive environment."

At Sunshine Gospel Ministries, we believe flourishing communities are built through moments like these, where culture is celebrated, local leaders and businesses are supported, and every individual is given the space to heal and thrive.
